Frequently Asked Questions

My ISP offers a managed firewall.
We do not recommend getting a managed firewall from your ISP.  There are several reasons for this.

First, your gateway security should be independent of your ISP.  If your ISP has an issue that effects the communication or security of your network infrastructure, do you really want to be dependent upon them to provide you with accurate and objective information and log data?

Second, your gateway should be ISP agnostic.  This means that it doesn't care who your ISP is.  We often times deploy WatchGuard Fireboxes that include SD-WAN service.  This means you have a failover internet connection, that should be provided by a completely different ISP than your primary ISP.   Plus should you decide to change ISPs in the future, it has little impact on your security infrastructure you have invested in.

Not all "managed" firewalls are equal.  What, exactly, does your ISP mean by "managed"?

Does that mean that their staff has the ability to login and make changes or that the firewall is part of a larger SIEM system of automation technologies that triggers proactive responses both automated and by expert staff?  There's a huge difference between something that can be managed and something that is actually managed by today's modern definition of "managed".
